Business and Bachelors<\/strong><\/h1>\n

New York\u2014Mon. June 4, 1984<\/strong>–Nice day.\u00a0 Headed off early for Westchester, then over the Throgs Neck Bridge to Long Island.\u00a0 Mom and Dad arrived at 7:00 p.m.\u00a0 Preparations under way for J.\u2019s bachelor party. Out to a small dinner and to bed at 12.<\/p>\n

New York–Tuesday June 5, 1984<\/strong>–Set out with Dad for INA.\u00a0 One of the first sunny, steamy days of the year.\u00a0 Subway downtown, good meeting.\u00a0 We had lunch in the INA cafeteria and headed home.\u00a0 Mom had the apartment all cleaned-up.\u00a0 Flowers in the windows, tables set up.\u00a0 Very nice.\u00a0 Dad and I bought two cases of beers for $50 which caused some soul-searching but I kept thinking: this is once in a lifetime stuff.\u00a0 Everybody was up and down the stairs all afternoon.\u00a0 Mrs. Graham\u2019s refrigerator stayed in the hallway the entire time.<\/p>\n

Liza came just after the parents took off — about 4:30.\u00a0 J. arrived just as Liza was leaving, about 7:30.<\/p>\n

The gang began arriving about 8:00.\u00a0 Once the food came I started drinking beers and smoking Woody K.\u2019s cigar and I had a very muddled and cheerful evening.<\/p>\n

New York–Wed. Jun. 6, 1984<\/strong>–D-Day\u2019s 40th<\/sup> Anniversary.\u00a0\u00a0 I woke up with a faint sense of unwell being\u2014head aching and tired but generally okay.\u00a0 Jeffersonville and Ellenville.\u00a0 I cancelled my plans to go dancing with Cathy.\u00a0\u00a0 Marc C. arrived on my doorstep with a bottle of French white wine, ready for the bachelor party.\u00a0 For some reason I\u2019d half wondered if he\u2019d show up a day late because I thought it was odd he hadn\u2019t come or called.<\/p>\n

Listened to a tape on the radio and sat in the living room with the table cleared and Franny and Zooey<\/em> opened, looking for ideas for a toast.\u00a0 Nothing conclusive yet.\u00a0 D.B. called collect and we talked until 1.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
