{"id":243,"date":"2012-08-07T13:04:15","date_gmt":"2012-08-07T17:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/?p=243"},"modified":"2012-08-07T13:07:12","modified_gmt":"2012-08-07T17:07:12","slug":"recollections-and-inspirations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/recollections-and-inspirations\/","title":{"rendered":"Recollections and Inspirations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fictional band from Rochester called The Buicks figures in my novel <em>Sidereal Days, The History of Rock &amp; Roll, A Romance<\/em>. \u00a0The Buicks are modeled after an actual Rochester-based band called The Invictas. \u00a0The real Invictas came along a bit later than the band in the storyline and, unlike the fictional Buicks, the Invictas are still a going concern.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Kohler, Mark Blumenfeld, Dave Hickey and Herb Gross were students and fraternity brothers in Phi Sigma Kappa at RIT. \u00a0They gained local fame as the bar band at Tiny\u2019s Bengal Inn where they built a devoted fan base and then branched out. \u00a0Their song <em>Do the Hump<\/em> or simply <em>The Hump<\/em> was a regional hit and they released an eponymous album. \u00a0As with the fictional Buicks, the draft hovered in the background of any footloose and fancy-free bunch of guys and service in the National Guard cramped the band\u2019s style a bit.<\/p>\n<p>They traveled to their gigs in a big old Cadillac hearse with \u201cTHE INVICTAS&#8221; emblazoned on the side. \u00a0They appeared at my high school, Olean High School, in January 1965. \u00a0Our typical high school dance bands were pretty amateurish, they were high school kids.\u00a0 Hair: \u201cshort back and sides,\u201d with amps the size of a Cracker Jack box. \u00a0For our high school dance we went way out on a limb.\u00a0 We put up a lot of money and with great trepidation hired a professional band.\u00a0 We hired The Invictas.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0The week before the concert an actual recording of their cover of Bo Diddley\u2019s <em>I\u2019m All Right <\/em>with one of those laconic, beckoning lead guitar openings, was played morning and night on the high school intercom.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_244\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-244\" data-attachment-id=\"244\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/recollections-and-inspirations\/jan-19650001\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jan-19650001.jpg?fit=565%2C539&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"565,539\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;HP Scanjet 4800&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"The Invictas in Olean, NY  January 1965\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Surrounded by admirers from left to right Mark, Jim, Herb and Dave.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jan-19650001.jpg?fit=565%2C539&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-244\" title=\"The Invictas in Olean, NY  January 1965\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jan-19650001.jpg?resize=300%2C286&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jan-19650001.jpg?resize=300%2C286&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jan-19650001.jpg?resize=314%2C300&amp;ssl=1 314w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mcelfreshmap.com\/tammynoriepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jan-19650001.jpg?w=565&amp;ssl=1 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-244\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Surrounded by admirers from left to right Mark, Jim, Herb and Dave.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A cold January night. \u00a0The huge crowd we generated packed close to the band, shocking with their long hair, and they obviously weren\u2019t kids. \u00a0The Invictas were men and they were professionals. They had pulled up in their hearse. They wore riding boots. \u00a0When the Invictas let loose, the crowd staggered back, almost knocked over, blasted by the power of their playing and the wattage of their amplifiers. \u00a0It was quite a night. \u00a0To top things off, all the money that was made that night went missing in the fall and was never seen again.<\/p>\n<p>The Invictas have reunited periodically over the years. \u00a0\u00a0In 2006 their longevity and continued local popularity came to the attention of NBC and resulted in a <em>Today Show<\/em> segment.\u00a0 <em>The Today Show\u2019s<\/em> taping included some background coverage and a live performance by the band in front of 5,000 people as the group opened for the Beach Boys.
